I think that I learned a lot this year in painting. I think I learned the most about oil painting, because I had never even worked with that medium before this class, and then we spent most of our time on it when we got here. I learned techniques such as how you can blend the colors easily when they aren't dry, how to do finer details, how to use palette knives, etc. If there was one thing I could go back and work on more with oil painting it would be using palette knives. I didn't get much time to practice with these except for one practice fruit drawing, but I really liked using them. It seems difficult but a challenge that I would enjoy.
My favorite medium that I have used in this class was acrylic. I like the fast drying speed because I think it easier to cover up mistakes, and to make sure that everything looks crisp and sharp like you want it to. I learned a lot of color mixing techniques and brush techniques with acrylics that I thought were very helpful. My favorite painting we did was the Hundertwasser painting in acrylic, and I liked this one because it allowed me to combine many sketches together and be creative while also using my favorite medium. If I could go back and redo one painting, it would be that one because I wish I could spend more time on the details and sky on that painting.
Overall, I was very pleased with this class. I know that I'm not very good at painting and it's not something I plan to do more of, but I do think I improved significantly from when I started in the class. I think I have gotten better at shading to make objects look more realistic and 3D, I have gotten better at mixing colors, and I have gotten better at brush detailing and making small parts of paintings look more neat and realistic. If there was more I could improve on, I would want to work on my general sketching skills and making the proportions of things right, because I think that is my main problem that makes my paintings look bad. I also think I need more work on figuring out where lights and shadows are to make 3D objects look more realistic. Overall, I am very happy with what I have learned in this class!
